Wanna have coffee really close to the water?
Are you someone who likes to start your day with an early morning walk, a nature fix, and coffee? Luckily I've discovered a place where you can have it all. It's a little hidden away and off the beaten track but worth the visit.
The spot is called "Gecko's Party Pontoons and Yonnies One Stop Shop" on the Currumbin side of Thrower's Bridge (not the main Gold Coast Highway bridge but the next one further down the creek). Yes it's an unusual sounding name for a coffee spot, and it's actually a small down to earth boat hire place which doubles as a kiosk.
What makes it most unique is that it's set right on the banks of Currumbin Creek. You can enjoy your coffee on a wooden bench under a huge shady tree just a few of metres away from the water. The combination of glistening water views and a quiet no-frills vibe is a soothing way to start the morning.
The service and amenities are basic, but as you can probably gather, the location and atmosphere makes up for that. In terms of food, Yvonne says they can make "everything", from breakfasts and toasted sandwiches to hot chips.
The journey there is also half the fun. Rather than parking right nearby, I'd suggest leaving the car on the other side of the creek and walking across Thrower's Bridge. It's nice to take your time walking and look down at the water. Some days the water's so clear you can see through it for metres. There's also a long walkway that follows the edge of the creek if you feel energetic.
