I'm sure most of you would have heard at sometime how customer referral is the best advertising you can get. Well, that's how I first learnt about GD - Wholesale Fruit & Vegetable Supplies . I was standing in a queue in a local shop in Blackwood when I overheard a conversation between two shoppers, who were discussing in glowing terms about a local fruit and veg business that supported local growers. They were only too willing to share their experiences with me, and that's how I became a customer too.

Located at Suffolk Road, Hawthorndene, this small, but successful family owned business has been operating since 1961. Owners, Ben and Trudy Nankervis, took over the existing business a few years ago, supplying fruit and vegetables wholesale to local schools and to childcare centres that provided after hours school care.

The business has grown considerably since then, and today it is more like a one-stop-shop that also supplies cafes, restaurants, and hotels in metropolitan and country areas, as well as a wonderful variety of grocery products, including gourmet lines for its retail customers.

Ben and Trudy have always worked with local growers to supply SA grown produce. They take great care to select quality, fresh fruit and vegetables, which is a major part of the business, working with local growers including Magarey Orchards in Coromandel Valley. "Our aim, is to try and keep our SA focus as much as we can, but also adding other specialty grocery items in our retail area to help the home cooks and chef complete a meal, including grains, nuts and spices," says Trudy.

It is not only the quality of the fresh fruit and vegetables that bring back customers time and time again, but the impressive products that keep growing within the store, including:

A range of breads including white, wholemeal, five grain, rye and sourdough from the Bel-air Bakery at Belair. "We like to work with local operators such as the Bel-air bakery as we see it not only enhances our business but is another local outlet for the wonderful variety of products they produce," said Trudy.

Home baker products including the range of pre-mix bread machine flour from Laucke for those who like to bake their own bread at home as well as a large range of gluten free baking products from Yes you can .

[ADVERT]A variety of Traditional Mettwurst and Small Goods from Steiny's in the Barossa.

Skara Smallgoods from Narine Gluten Free, award winning, artisan smallgoods including ham, bacon, fritz, prosciuto, salami, and kranski.

A range of traditionally produced cow and goat's cheeses from the multi award winning Woodside Cheese and Udder Delights in the Adelaide Hills, and La Vera Cheese from Newton. La Vera's beautifully produced ricotta, holoumi and parmesan cheese is a favourite among many of the customers.

A unique range of veggie burgers and falafels made from local Australian farmers' produce from Larder Fresh . There are two varieties which are not only very tasty, but are also free of gluten, egg, dairy, wheat, garlic, onion, and preservatives.

Locally owned FRESHSTOCK , Australia's leading producer of fresh traditional chef-made stocks for soups and cooking, whether it be chicken, beef and organic vegetable. A very complementary product to the GD Wholesale's vegetable range.

A complete range of capers grown in the Southern Flinders Ranges from Nelshaby Capers, , including dry packed caper bud and semi-dried buds, caper tapenade, caper berries, and caper stuffed kalamata olives.

Various locally produced and wonderfully colourful soup mixes and cookie mixes. These not only provide a great time saver in the kitchen, but they are ideal presents for kids and older people alike from Stemz Cookie and Soup Mixes.

Soft drinks and cordials from Trend Drinks, makers of F.C. Grubb , from Gladstone including the old favourites such as ginger beer, sarsaparilla, portello and cream soda. With a history spanning more than a 100 years, Trend Drinks is the last remaining small soft drink manufacturer in South Australia.

For those last minute meals, a variety of frozen neopolita and bolognese lasagne, gluten and non-gluten free gnocci, pizza bases and tasty dressed Italian pizzas from Australian Happy Foods, who have a restaurant on top of Willunga Hill called Our Place.

At a time when we constantly hear retail reports of declining sales and major multi-national supermarkets raging war with each other with various incentives such as fuel offers to gain customers business, here is a small local family business growing very nicely as it continually provides excellent service, quality locally grown produce, and a variety of food items at reasonable prices.

This is my favourite family owned, fruit and vegetable one-stop-shop in Adelaide. I know there are others out there, what is your favourite?
