Gasworks is a not-for-profit community arts park located on the site of the former South Melbourne gas plant, 3kms from the CBD in Albert Park. Set upon eight glorious acres, the park houses two theatres, three gallery spaces, a cafe, a kids' bookshop and function and workshop spaces.
Gasworks has 14 resident visual artists who are available to discuss their work during the park's Studio Open Days, and a small, dedicated staff who present an annual program of festivals, events, creative classes and workshops for children and adults to develop their art skills, as well as professional development opportunities for artists.
Also held are over 70 performing arts events and 40 visual arts exhibitions each year. There's something for every age, ability and interest, and Gasworks prides itself on its accessibility to a broad audience, including queer, disabled, Indigenous and ethnically diverse communities.
On the 3rd Saturday of every month, visitors can enjoy the "plastic bag free" Gasworks Farmers' Market, where over 50 stallholders set up to sell locally grown, organic produce. Entry to the market is free, and there's no better way to spend your Saturday morning than to trawl the stalls and pick up some yummy seasonal goodies for the family.
