I have a had a life-long love of the arts; enjoying theatre, ballet, art and movies. We are all time poor and have limits to our entertainment budget so I hope an honest review will help make your choices easier.
A little naughty and extremely clever
Theatre is dying and only one man can save it! Or ... really, really take the piss out of it.
To stick it to his critics, Garry Starr takes on every genre of theatre possible, and the result is a side-splitting hour which will leave you giggling as you remember scenes for days. Maybe months? Most of those flashbacks will be slightly traumatic and disturbingly titillating — a condition known as PTGSD (Post Traumatic Garry Starr Disorder).
When the show opens with Garry gyrating in very clingy and fairly see-through white tights and a G-String (and by that I mean, 'GEEE can I pleeease scrub that image from my mind') some slightly uncomfortable giggles begin. When stream after stream of latecomers trigger a repeat of the opening scene, the giggles turn to raucous laughter. I have to say, the only time I wasn't laughing raucously was when I was quietly in awe of this guy's serious talents.
After artfully catching our attention, Garry treats us to a range of performance styles. The slightly furry rendition of Swan Lake was my personal favourite; Garry totally bared his soul (and other things) with this poignant and strangely elegant performance. My other favourite was the Noh performance. Do you know Noh? No! Well worry not, Garry knows Noh and does a noble job of capturing both the precise timing of drum-driven movement and magical transformational quality of the Japanese masks. If Noh and Ballet are not your things, no problem, Garry also artfully, and maybe a little irreverently redefines Shakespeare, Circus, Rom-Com, Drama, Mime, etc, etc.
On a very serious note,Garry Starr is incredibly talented. Beautifully expressive, seriously graceful, artfully athletic and totally blessed with impeccable comedic timing. If you aren't opposed to a little nudity, then do yourself a favour and rush along tonight to the 2019 Comedy Festival at the Brisbane Powerhouse to check out Garry Starr, or follow this link to find out where Garry will be performing next.
