Loathe it or love it, garlic tends to have that reaction.
It's Garlic Galore @
Northside Produce Market
Garlic is known throughout history, cultures and alternative medicine in regards to the prevention and treatment of colds. It's no wonder that garlic is used to promote health. It is interesting to note that garlic has played important dietary and medicinal roles throughout history.
In medieval times, garlic was used to treat different diseases. Greek historical records show evidence during the earliest Olympics that garlic was fed to athletes to increase stamina. Whereas Chinese and Indian medicine recommended garlic to aid respiration and digestion.
Koreans swear by the healthy bacteria assisting with digestion based on the use of garlic in fermented cabbage known as kimchi.
During the Renaissance period, Europeans were attracted to the health benefits of garlic.
Alex Hubert, chef and food consultant from Northside Produce Market (NPM), will be revealing the secrets of garlic with some of NSW's best garlic farmers. Alex will be questioning the garlic farmers on crops, is garlic really the best defence against vampires and find out a few home truths.
Alex will also tempt your taste buds and test your imagination cooking her favourite garlic dishes.
Discover what Garlic Bombs are, how to differentiate the seeds and bulbils from the garlic flower head. Learn how to use parts of garlic which pack a punch and hit ingredient with chefs.
Did you know that seeds were only used to produce blended garlic and it takes two years? Growers prefer to use cloves to propagate, which produces a perfect clone of the original bulb and takes less time to harvest.
Pepe Saya, known for his butter, will be manning a stall producing freshly churned garlic butter exclusively for this event. I hear this product was sold out within two hours last year, so you may need to move fast.
Gilles from Gilles Bonin Australian Garlic will teach you how to plait garlic, so you can show off to all your friends and family.
