Learn how to make a self-watering planter box
Leisurely reading through one of the local newspapers I came across a community event that I was very keen to attend. The Bethania Street Community Garden at Lota is hosting a gardening workshop on Sunday 23rd October 2016. From 1.00pm through to 4.00pm, gardening guru Roman Spur will be showing participants the techniques to produce 50 to 70 percent of your family's fruit and vegetable requirements. Attendees will also learn the art of building a self-watering planter box.

The Bethania Street Community Garden was born in September 2011 under a licence from the Brisbane City Council. The garden consists of twenty raised beds that include herb spirals and a fruit orchard. We can't rely these days on a constant rain fall, so the garden utilises its own rain water storage and a large compost to maintain a healthy garden.

The garden is open daily between dawn and dusk with an agenda of different events and regular group meetings throughout the year. Playgroup meets every Tuesday from 8.30am and is suitable for children from the ages of new born to five years of age. If you are wanting to keep up to date with what is happening at the garden, you can visit their webpage. Some of the events charge a small fee, some are free.

You can become part of this amazing garden as new members and volunteers are always welcome. Being a member gives you the opportunity to be invited to member-only events, receive newsletters, voicing an opinion on seasonal planting and access to locally grown organic food. Plus, you shall also be sharing knowledge and making like-minded friends. If this is something you would like to do, you can obtain a membership form by sending a message to the group through the contact tab on their webpage. Other than memberships, you can give a donation or become a sponsor.

On a Wednesday from 7.00am the garden's members get together for Gardening Time, where they inspire each other to maintain and create a fabulous range of fruit, flowers, herbs and vegetables.

The Introduction to Organic Gardening workshop on Sunday 23rd October is free; however bookings are essential for this event. If you are as keen as I am to attend, you will need to ring 0439 048 585 to confirm your attendance. I may even see you there.
