Gardening in the Library

Planning to pop into your local
Brisbane City Council library sometime soon?
If so, don't be surprised if you see a trail of muddy footprints stretching from the door across the floor, as well as the odd wheelbarrow, shovel, watering can or punnet of seedlings.
For libraries offer so much more than books these days.
In line with
Brisbane City Council's Green Heart environmental engagement program , libraries are now offering
free short courses on sustainable gardening , including no-dig gardening, growing food, propagating plants and keeping chickens.
There are also programs on cultivating butterfly gardens, heirloom seed saving and swapping, creating green roofs and vertical gardening, tree changing and many, many more.
It's all part of a broader drive to encourage the sorts of changes which will transform Brisbane into Australia's most sustainable city.
These library-run courses complements a range of other
Green Living initiatives including Council's free native plants program, sustainable housing checklist, community and city farm resources and composting and worm farming workshops.
And not to forget the annual highlight of the
Green Heart Fair which will be held on 1 June 2014.
