I may just have discovered a hidden gardening secret behind Roma Street Parklands spectacular floral displays. The answer lies underground in the luscious soil, which is helped along by its very own onsite worm farm.

You see, the Parkland's stunning cafe aptly named, The Garden Room has set up a composting system through a worm farm to transform the discarded coffee grounds and leftover waste material into hardy, delicious plant food.

The coffee grounds and waste food matter from the cafe contributes to creating a mighty, luscious feast for the slippery, hard-working earthworms to earn their keep by creating earthy rich soil for the Parkland's sensational garden beds.

So, what is a worm farm? Well, keen gardeners will know that worm farms are homes where these composting warriors live and grow all the while converting the organic waste into worm castings and a nutrient-rich liquid, which are both high-quality fertilisers for gardens.

Worm farms are fed a variety of nutrient-rich vegetable and fruit scraps along with coffee grounds leftover from creating those aromatic cups of Joe. You see, coffee grounds are a fertiliser which enriches soil properties by providing a source of nitrogen to promote plant growth. The whole process is known as vermicomposting.

What is the worm farm like at The Garden Room? The Garden Room's composting system contains 4 covered green containers which are located in a shady spot at the side of the cafe. This is where the waste is deposited and the magic begins.

The coffee grounds and food scraps from the cafe are provided to the grounds staff of the Parklands who manage the worm farm. Don't worry. There is no smell and each container is secured with a padlock so there's no risk of any little wrigglers wandering off.

Though the worms are not visible to passersby, a staff member from The Garden Room assured me that they are large and plump, obviously enjoying their Spring feast.

The worm farm has signage and information about the process, including which foods and materials can be added to the worm farm and which need to be excluded. After creating mouth-watering food treats and smooth cups of coffee, it's good to know that nothing goes to waste and contributes to nurturing new life in the garden for everyone to enjoy.

The value of worm farms
What are some of the benefits of worm farms, both for the parklands and for the keen home gardener? Well, worm farms:Minimise food waste returning nutrients to the soil. Are good for the environment as composting worms reduce the amount of greenhouse gas generated as they transform organic matter into worm castings.Produce quick results and the labour is free.

The Roma Street Parklands is located in the heart of the Brisbane CBD. Entry is free as is viewing the exterior of the worm farm. But remember - no peeking inside while they are hard at work!

After enjoying my breakfast at The Garden Room, I left feeling pleased, knowing that just as the coffee brings joy to the cafe's visitors, so it will also help bring new life to the garden and the next source of joy to park visitors in days to come. And that's got to be good for everyone.
