Sacred Tibet meets Aussie bush at
Chenrezig Institute's Garden of Enlightenment . As you wander across the natural rainforest bridges and past tiny cabins nestled beneath bamboo, the bush opens out to reveal a garden with eight huge (the central stupa being 10 metres tall) traditional Tibetan Buddhist Stupas.
These unusual Stupas depict The Eight Great Deeds of the Buddha, are filled with holy relics and mantras and decorated in finest detail. The lower level of the shrine building is surrounded by traditional Tibetan prayer wheels, and house many memorial stupas where the consecrated ashes of loved ones may be placed. Landscaped gardens surround the shrine with flowers and water features adding the to serenity.
On June 16, 2011,
His Holiness the Dalai Lama , arrived by helicopter to bless the stupas, ashes and gardens. This is indeed a powerful place and ideal for an afternoon of contemplation. There are also many interesting weekend courses open to the general public at Chenrezig Institute.
The Open Day is the best way to taste life in an Aussie Buddhist Nunnery - meet a real Tibetan lama, try meditation, enjoy lunch at the
Big Love Cafe , buy some handmade healing incense in the
gift shop and learn about the symbolism behind the stupas.
