They say when one door closes another one opens and that certainly was the case for many Queensland game developers after the GFC. With company closures and staff layoffs the gaming industry was in crisis mode - but for many talented developers this was the beginning of new opportunities and a chance for them to showcase their independent skills. The influx of creativity in the market coupled with the rapid advancement in digital technology saw the rise of the indie game movement, with our Queensland developers right at the forefront.

In celebration of our current diverse and dynamic gaming scene, the State Library of Queensland is hosting Garage Gamer - a program featuring a free gaming space, creative gaming workshops, special guest talks and game related social nights, all running from 5th January – 14th April 2013.

Garage Gamer features a free interactive gaming gallery which will be open to the public from 10am – 6pm Mon-Thursday, or 10am – 5pm Friday-Saturday. The gaming space will showcase the latest video and mobile games on the market and give visitors a chance to test them out for themselves.

The gallery is decked out with iPads, PCs and big screens for the ultimate gaming experience and with free entry, you can afford to drop in as many times as you like.

Creative workshops, industry talks, special events and film screenings are all part of the Garage Gamer exhibition. The workshops and talks give gamers and aspiring developers unique access to Queensland's successful games producers and provides an opportunity to learn about the industry and gain insights from the best. Developers featured as part of Garage Gamer include, Halfbrick, Defiant Development, Curious Bear, Disparity Games, Visual Outbreak and more.

Brisbane's very own Halfbrick Studios, creator of the popular game Fruit Ninja, will be hosting the Level Up games night in March which will feature gaming play-off's, meet-ups and demos - check out the link and book your spot for a great night of gaming entertainment.
