The LOCO Shop is situated in a very quiet part of The Gap, in the SOWN Environment Centre Shed between the Yoorala Street Community Garden and the Balaangala Garden Space. This is a profit sharing business based on the values of cooperation and a concern for others and the environment. The aim of the LOCO shop is to make organic food more affordable and accessible while still supporting organic farmers.
All the produce sold through this business is certified organic with most of it being bought through organic wholesalers and the remainder bought directly from certified organic farmers. You should be aware that anybody can say their produce is organic. To be certain that you are really buying organic, look for the logo of one of the certifying bodies.
Co-op workers are paid the minimum wage and pre-ordering is encouraged in an effort to minimize waste. These factors help to keep prices as low as possible. Whilst prices for certified organic fruit and vegetables are fairly stable in Brisbane, the co-op is not certain of prices until produce is picked up from the wholesaler. Weekly and monthly updates in relation to prices are available by email - just ask to be added to the list. To receive a current price list and details about ordering, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
The shop is open two days each week - Monday and Friday from 9am - 5pm. Drop in to make your purchases or pre-order by email by noon on Sundays, for pick-up on Mondays after 1pm. The ordering system is flexible: order weekly, fortnightly or whenever you need to. You can order exactly what you need by weight or number of items, specify your upper spend limit and prioritise your list, or order a set box where produce is selected for you with a good variety of produce in season and providing good value for money, A delivery service is available on Mondays to The Gap and surrounding suburbs.
The Gap Local Organic Cooperative also has a stall at The Gap Farmer's Market, every second Sunday. Please note that this market is now being held at the Hilda Road State School. The market runs from 6.30am - 11.00am and the next one will be held on September 28th.
