Thirty something girl, originally from Sydney but Brisbane is home now. Eats, drinks, socialises, watches art-house, studies the stars, and loves music. I'm a professional copywriter and editor. Hearts writing things.
Just as the 'man crush' on Harry Kewell inspired men around the world to strap on shin pads and take to the soccer field, I blame Maria Sharipova for me busting out a flippy skirt, buying a Slazenger racquet, and taking adult tennis lessons at The Gap Health & Racquet Club.
Tennis lessons are a great way to meet people, while keeping fit and improving your skills. Group classes cost $153 and go for nine weeks. There are beginner and intermediate classes, and you have the option of day or evening sessions. There's even cardio tennis for those who really want to work up a sweat on the court. Classes are small, so you'll receive personalised tuition from the coaches - but if you don't like learning in a group, one-on-one sessions are also available.
In the beginners class, you'll start with the basics; learning proper racquet grips and practising correct footwork. From there you'll move onto ground strokes like forehand and backhand, right through to volley shots and serves. Hour long coaching sessions allow plenty of time to practise these skills, and activities are always varied to keep lessons interesting and fun.
The Gap Health & Racquet Club is located on Settlement Road, The Gap. Adjoining the Racquet Club is a Health Club which boasts a cardio and cycle gym, weights room, personal training studio, ladies only gym circuit, and various fitness classes.
So rather than vicariously living your tennis dreams by watching Fox Sports, why not drag yourself from that comfy couch and go try the real thing! Who knows, it may just become your next hobby.
