Milawa is a go-to destination for food and wine in the region of northeastern Victoria. Tourists and locals visit in order to purchase the wares of regional producers such as Sam Miranda Wines, Brown Brothers, Milawa Cheese shop and the Gamze family. Felix Gamze migrated from Slovenia to Wangaratta in the 1960s and in 2014, after honing his trade of butchery, he created a state of the art smallgoods factory in Wangaratta. The
smallgoods are premium products that are made in the European tradition from unique family recipes and are handcrafted, nitrite and gluten-free. Gamze is a family-owned and operated business and they are committed to low food miles using local ingredients and ethically farmed free range pork, chicken, beef and turkeys.
The curing process is chemical and additive-free using salt, local honey and natural nitrite.
Opening in October 2017,
Gamze Smokehouse Restaurant & Bar is situated perfectly for a long lazy lunch when in this area. The family-friendly menu is based around pizzas and burgers but for my mind, one can't go past a platter of the smokehouse products. The meats on the platter included chorizo, ham, smoked chicken, turkey, cabanossi, smoked trout and pastrami. Everything was delicious with unique flavours the meats were moist with a delicate natural smoky flavour that was complemented by a serve of pickled vegetables, sourdough bread, local olive oil and a wedge of Milawa cheese.
The service was friendly and welcoming and it was very relaxing sharing a platter whilst drinking a couple of beers from nearby breweries. They also serve cocktails, wine, soft drinks, coffee and cake. You can sit in the covered outdoor area or inside, which is decorated like an American diner.
Don't worry if you can't make it to Wangaratta or Milawa, Gamze products can be ordered online or purchased from a farmers market or one of their stockists .
