Every Wednesday evening, the Sporting Globe in Moonee Ponds takes a break from broadcasting Footy on its multiple screens. That doesn't mean that the air of competition goes away however. In fact, it's amplified many times over. At the Globe, Wednesday Night is Trivia Night.

Game On Trivia, presented by Funky Bunch, is 5 rounds of questions spaced over the course of 2 hours. There is no minimum or maximum number of participants to a team, so whether you wish to fly solo or you have 20 of your closest friends visiting from out of town, you'll be able to compete. All questions are read out by the host and displayed on the monitors embedded in the Sporting Globe booths. There are 8-10 questions to a round of differing categories.

Trivia Nights are synonymous with the bar culture in Melbourne. Throw a rock in the CBD and you'll be able to hit a hotel or pub that is hosting some form of Trivia that evening (you shouldn't throw rocks though, it's dangerous). The organisers at Funky Bunch seem to be well aware of this, which is why the venues they run Trivia in stand out as the most polished, organised, and straight up entertaining spots to frequent.

In particular, Moonee Ponds Sporting Globe is hosted by the entertaining and quick-witted Chris (last name omitted for privacy and because he never told me it), who keeps the game running at a smooth and agreeable pace. The number of teams who are playing fluctuates on a week by week basis, but he never misses a beat regardless if the room is at capacity or tumbleweeds are blowing across the floor.

Furthermore, the Funky Bunch formula is a combination of both general knowledge questions and participatory activities that allow anyone to get involved, regardless on whether or not their brain resembles an encyclopaedia. Examples of ways to earn points on any given Wednesday include memory testers, a word scramble, and the ever-popular beer-skulling, where one must let out their inner punter and pick which brave volunteer will down their pot of lager first.

When I first attended a couple of months ago I was apprehensive. Being held at a Sports Bar and not hailing from Australia, I was nervous that all questions would be sporting related. Since I don't know the AFL from the NRL, or what either of those even STAND for, I was convinced I would be out of my depth. I needn't have worried however. While there is one round dedicated to sports, the rest of the categories are a perfect balance of pop-culture, global geography, music, and current events. No matter where you call home, you have as much of a chance of answering correctly as the team next to you.

Game On Trivia is a perfect distraction from your 9-5, and an excellent way to get over the mid-week hump. The night usually wraps up around 9:30 so it's not unreasonably late for a work week. And the drink and food specials put on by Sporting Globe make it an outing that's friendly on the wallet as well.

If you're looking to test your 5 W's and 1 H, and want to brag to your co-workers how you became a Trivia champion, head to Moonee Ponds on a Wednesday. Fair warning though: they may not be that impressed. I know from experience.
