It being my wife's birthday, I decided to take advantage of a 'Groupon' promotion for a less than half price "Two-Tiered Hot and Cold Seafood Platter for Two with a Large Bowl of Fries". I thought that it would be a good bargain at $60 for a $139 meal for two.
Reservation via their website was required as part of the deal, however, this proved to be a major headache due to a user unfriendly booking system. In my opinion, the system needs to be designed to be more user-friendly and it took eight attempts to finally make a booking. This was rather surprising in that the restaurant was later seen to be half empty for the times we had attempted to book.
Anyway, with reservation successfully in place and 'Groupon' voucher in hand, we turned up for our meal. The staff was polite and courteous and showed us to our selected table outside. Within a reasonable amount of time, a rather impressive platter of seafood arrived. The meal proved to be more than enough for two people to eat. The staff attended table frequently to enquire if we needed any further assistance.
After an hour or so, we finished our meal, both happy and satisfied.
This has been a rather difficult review to write; a quick search on Google will show a range of both good and not so good reviews for this restaurant. I suggest that you read these before visiting the restaurant. All I can say is that on this occasion, we were happy with our meal, the venue and the staff.
I also used a groupon voucher and have had the same issues with the booking system, except we were very disappointed with our meal and the service we received.
We were seated in the back corner of the restaurant, with very little room to move despite making our booking two weeks in advance.
We had to ask for drinks (not even a bottle of water or glasses of water on the table), the seafood platter was very sub standard (compared to a number of other places that serve a similar seafood platter) and the service was almost non-existent (Apart from dropping off the food and drinks, the staff didn't come near us).
There was a family on the next table to us (two adults and three children) who left shortly after we arrived, however, their table was not cleared away for the whole time we were there.
There one saving grace was the other meal items we ordered (Soft shell crab and starter plate). Pity these wasn't more of it as we really enjoyed it.
All in all, it wasn't an enjoyable experience Maybe they had an off night but I'm sorry to say we won't be going back.
I agree that the online booking system took a while to get a booking. (I tried weekdays at every time for the next two weeks). I finally decided to book for the first week in December. WORKED .
I have been here so many times and used the booking system and never had a problem (on one occasion, changed to booking online to a different date and it worked first time)
I love this restaurant. I have been there about 6 times (and am going again in early December and the following week for their "soft shell crab burger")
I think the trick is (a) buy a voucher (b) book online straight away for a date in the future so that you get a date you want before others book (c) enjoy the great food and service
I have just come back from another great lunch at Gambaros. Once again the seafood was fantastic and SO fresh.
The staff were very helpful and I cant wait to go again (actually next week when we are trying out the "soft shell crab burger"). A few people were having that today and it looks great.
