A few months ago, I wrote about the lovely dinner I had at Ryde Royal Hotel. I recently returned to the Royal and discovered that Gallagher Hotels bought the Royal Hotel about one month ago.

Very little has changed to the hotel since being added to the Gallagher acquisition, adding to their stable of P.J. Gallagher hotels, Belgian Beer Cafe, Jacksons On George, among others. Irish dishes have been introduced on to the menu such as the Irish lamb stew or the Irish pork sausage with mash and whisky jus. The beloved curry meal was reinstated after complaints that it had been removed from the menu.

One of my companions had the beer battered barramundi and chips which was very tasty. Another companion had the masala curry with rice, naan bread and pappadum. This was very spicy yet delicious.
Another enjoyed the hotel special of wagyu beef burger and chips. The aioli on the burger had a sharp tang which was enticing.
I tucked into the steak and guinness pie with an odd topping of green mashed peas on top of creamy mashed potato. I initially found the green mashed blob on top of the pie unusual, but the taste of this guinness pie won me over.

One thing that hasn't changed is the service. It is still friendly and helpful. I hope that as the Royal Hotel evolves over the next 12 months, it will still retain its warmth and wonderful simplicity.
