So here's something many people of Perth are apparently unaware of.

We have a drive-in theatre. Yeah, we do.

For those born after 1997, a drive-in theatre is where you can watch a movie outdoors, on the big screen, from your car.

And to all others, it's the place where Danny takes Sandy on a date in Grease. Then he's stranded at the drive-in, branded a fool, what will they say, Monday at school?

Previously, each parking spot would have speakers running off a cable, so you could pull them in to your windows to hear the dialogue.

Now, thanks to that wonderful thing called modern technology, all you need to do is tune your car radio to the station in which the movie is tuned to, and you have yourself your very own car theatre.

And honestly, snuggled in the back seat with a big blanket, pillows and a packet of popcorn can ultimately be better than a real cinema. It's like your own private theatre. You can even get away with wearing your pyjamas.

And if your car stereo system is pretty hot, you'll probably have better overall sound in that little car of yours than in any cinema.

When I was a little girl, my mum and dad took me to the old Cannington drive-in. I remember being so excited when we rolled up.

Don't ask me what we saw, I think that I was just amazed at the fact that I was watching a movie from inside the car.
Sadly, it's no longer there and has now been taken over by housing.

But thankfully, there is one more left in Perth.

The one I speak of is called Galaxy Drive-In in Kingsley. A name I can only assume came about because when you watching a movie from your car, you are doing so under the stars, with the galaxy right there above you. Fitting.

Open Tuesday to Sunday, depending on what day you go, you'll get the chance to watch one or two movies.

From Tuesday to Thursday, only one movie is screened with gates opening at 6pm. The adult price for these nights is $9 each, Children aged 4-12 years are $4 each, Children under 4 are free, and Tuesday night is BARGAIN day for just $15 per car.

Amazing, if you consider the prices you pay these days for a cinema you share with 100 others.

From Friday to Sunday, Galaxy Drive-In screens two films for the evening, with gates opening at 7pm. Adult prices on these days are $10 each, Children aged 4-12 years are $5 each, and Children under 4 are still free.

And although two movies may seem like a lot, you'd be surprised at how quickly the time goes by. I personally think it has something to do with the novelty of it.

The Galaxy Drive In website keeps you up to date with what is currently playing, and also their coming attractions.

And although the idea of a drive-in may be a little old school, the films are always the newest and most popular of releases.

You can also sign up to their mailing list attractions here , where you will always be kept up to date with the future films to be screened at Galaxy.

The main film currently playing at Galaxy is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II, with the support movie on Friday to Sunday being Red Riding Hood.

A great idea for the kids, it's always good to check the film ratings anyway just to make sure the flicks are appropriate for the kids.

Although hot food is available on site, you can pack yourself up a nice little hamper and do it deliciously on the cheap. But you will want to make sure you bring something that isn't going to ruin your seat covers. Unlike real cinema's, you do have to clean up after yourself.

I don't know about you, but popcorn for me is considered a messy food. I end up getting half on the floor, and half in my mouth, mainly due to the fact that I'm eating in the dark. Having said that, you can't watch a movie without it, so just try your best to get it in your mouth and pop your own and take it along.

You can then pack up an esky with chopped up fruit or veg to snack on, and juice boxes are a great drink option, for adults and kids.

If you stick with less sugar, you won't have kids up screaming all night. Which reminds me of this one time that I gave a child a candy cane.

Ten minutes later, the kid was running around the building with red around his mouth and his mother asking me what on earth I gave him. I didn't realise it had sugar in it because it was 'mint' flavoured. I figured it was like tooth paste.

Then I guess I should have realised with something that has 'candy' in the name. Shame on me. Although it was some years ago. (Some years ago being three).

But I digress.

Galaxy Drive-In is cash only, so don't expect to use your credit card there with one swift swipe like the usual places. This is a drive-in remember, which is great because they are keeping it old school.

And that's just the way I like it.
