In the CBD, short on cash, and need a quick but tasty bite? Gaijin Lunch Bar on Little Bourke Street is the place to go.

Gaijin is located between Elizabeth Street and Hardware Lane. Comfortable, plush couches at the front invite you to take a seat and stay a while.

[ADVERT]The interior is interesting, with an eclectic array of decorations and trinkets around the open room. Numerous frames adorn the walls (including one of a flower and a joke we didn't quite decipher). There is even one of Despicable Me to be sighted, and an old NES sitting on the back shelf.

It was over 30 degrees on the day we ate here. They only had fans, so if you're looking for prickly cool places to chill at, you may want to reconsider. Otherwise, an ice cold drink and refreshingly sweet service is enough to take your mind off the weather.

Lunch offerings range from $8 to $10. An adequate selection of different meats on rice and udons are available to sate your appetite. Alcoholic beverages, including plum wine, sake, wines and ciders are also available.

Special Tiger Don

If you've still got some space, sides range from $4.50 for the humble bowl of edamame to $9.50 for soft shell crab.

Gaijin are open 11.30am - 3.30pm, Monday - Wednesday. Their hours are extended from Thursday - Saturday closing at 9pm, so you can stop by for a catch up dinner with friends as well.

Otherwise, they're still serving lunch on Sundays. Bear in mind they don't take reservations.

Fun fact: Gaijin refers to a non-Japanese person, or more literally, 'outsider'. So stray from the crowd; come along and be an outsider in your own city.
