It had been a long day and we all wanted some comfort food without venturing too far from our hotel.

The reception recommended a Thai restaurant located nearby.

Gai Thai is a suburban family-owned Thai restaurant in midst of a country town. The restaurant operates from a residential house with western wallpaper and Thai decorations.

The fit-outs are a bit of a mix-n-match ensemble. Not the most inviting dining atmosphere and I was relived to see other diners here.

We ordered some drinks from the 'bar' and waited for our tables.

The bartender/waiter/restaurant manager brought out our drinks. The Toblerone cocktail tasted more like a Milo milky drink than a proper cocktail. It was a disappointment.

We started off our meal withsome vegetarian spring rolls. No one can fault something deep fried and crunchy at the start of the meal.

The Tom Yum (Hot & Sour) soup tasted all right, but we were surprised at the size of the serving. We know we've ordered entree but in a rice-bowl serving quantity? Thai food must be a rare and exotic cuisine here in Coffs Harbour.

This dish did not look appetising at all - it looked like a very rough home-cooked meal. It certainly looked and tasted different to Sydney's Thai restaurants. With a price tag of $17.90, I expected something better.

This is the tastiest dish of tonight. Sizzling hot chicken was served on an iron hot plate. The fried chicken was tender and the sauce was sweet but slightly too oily in my opinion. It goes well with the plain white rice.

You be the judge. Does this looked like a delicious Chicken Pad-Thai noodles? True to its appearance, the noodle tasted quite plain too and lacked the authentic Thai flavour.

I truly think Sydney is very blessed with delicious Thai food at our fingertips. Even the food courts serve very appetising Thai food nowadays.

My summary for this place: 'Localised taste and service.'
