for something to do when you are on holiday in the Jindabyne region. The NSW government-owned hatchery is on the banks of the Thredbo River about 10km north-west of Jindabyne just off Kosciuszko Road. Open since October 1953, the hatchery is responsible for stocking the dams and rivers of the snowy mountains, central tablelands, southern highlands and the New England regions of NSW with premium cold water sports fish. Four species of cold water fish, Atlantic Salmon, Brook Trout, Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout are bred and reared to maturity in the pristine waters diverted from the Thredbo River.
The hatchery opens at 10am and it is well worth doing one of the guided tours that run at 10am and 2pm daily. After watching a ten minute film on its history and operations the group is taken on a walking tour past ponds full of fish at each developmental stage. We found the guide to be informative and interesting, he was happy to answer questions and entertained us with some funny stories. You have the opportunity to feed some of the fish and may be lucky enough to touch some of the smaller ones.
has over one hectare of picturesque parkland that is free to visit. Picnic shelters, barbecues and toilet facilities are available and it is also an access point for walkers and mountain bikers to the
Thredbo Valley Track .
Just remember fishing is not permitted in this area.
