A visit to Fyansford Paper Mills, a unique complex on the outskirts of Geelong, is a journey through bluestone history. The atmospheric building, a testament to the past, was meticulously constructed between 1876 to 1878. Its significance is further underscored by its Heritage Victoria listing.
The buildings and water race at Fyansford Paper Mills are not just a glimpse into the past but a stunning example of the industrial architecture of the time. The sight is reminiscent of an English countryside, akin to the picturesque cover of George Elliot's Mill and the Floss - the classic novel published in 1860. Prepare to be captivated by the beauty of the past.
In the Victorian era, this bluestone mill pulped rags to make paper. Today, the present owner, Alex Robins, has not just restored it but transformed it into what he lovingly refers to as an Industrial Cathedral. This personal touch in the restoration adds a layer of connection, making the old mill a labyrinth of galleries, artist studios, workshops, and boutique shops with handmade goods, a place where history comes alive.
This tour discusses the original mill buildings, manager's house, six workers’ cottages, a bluestone water race with impeller, tower and stone weir.
Tours take you through the site to follow the papermaking trail and hear stories and historic details along the way. While there, enjoy the artisan workshops and galleries, a winery and restaurant, a café & more.
Enjoy a coffee at The Door Gallery Cafe surrounded by antique Indian doors. Provenance Wines has a cellar door and restaurant in the main building. Here, you can enjoy tastings matched with food pairings. RONE painted one of his famous esoteric faces on the back wall. As street art is so transient, it’s great to see a lasting testament to his work.
