You know how they say that sometimes things just work themselves out for the best? I have proof this is a true saying. I booked into a delightful motel overlooking Hervey Bay and as I settled in I decided I'd make myself a cuppa and relax with a good book. As nice as the motel is there was no way this was going to happen. To have a cuppa I had to use sachets of instant coffee powder and tiny, tiny cups. I decided to go for a walk and see if there was a reasonable alternative nearby.
Almost immediately I proved that old saying to be correct. I had walked about 50 metres and ended up in front of fX of Coffee, 471 The Esplanade (corner of Witt Street), Torquay at Hervey Bay. It looked very promising from the outside. 'How good is this?' I thought and went on in and it got even better.
The bamboo shrouded counter held a great display of coffee and other delicacies and beside it was a fridge of great looking sweet treats and light meals. There were several comfy sofas and some chairs and tables giving you an opportunity to take some time out with friends and enjoy your coffee and cake. If, like me, you don't have any friends with you, then you can make use of the books and magazines left there for your enjoyment.
There was fast and very professional action on the espresso machine but the best part was the conversation that came with the service. I was also most impressed with the adaptation of physics as the secret to making great coffee.
Einstein probably never knew how important his discovery really is.
Andrew explained he hadn't been there very long and was currently building up the business. He uses a Sustainable Coffee range from single origin growers and roasters and includes blends from as far afield as Ethiopia, Papua New Guinea and even Bolivia – who would have thought you could travel the world by sipping coffee?
I put in my usual order – the biggest flat white available.
After wandering back to my room I relaxed with my coffee and book.
Now my philosophy is that I won't tell you what is 'best', because I would have to try everything to know that. However, I do tell you if I like something and the flat white I got atfX of Coffee is something I really liked. It is up there with the best I have ever tried. It had that beautiful coffee fragrance and slipped over my taste buds leaving an aftertaste of a fresh, rich and full-bodied coffee. I'm going back for more before I have to head home, that's for sure.
If you are a full-blown coffee aficionado or, like me, just enjoy a good coffee, make you way over to fX of Coffee; it'll be worth your while. Relax with a good book or, if he's not too busy, have a chat with Andrew; you're sure to enjoy the experience.
