I find it difficult to return to the same cafe when there's always a new one to try. , however, is one exception. They're a Japanese bakery that opened early this year and have since expanded both their space and menu to offer brunch options.
The cafe is split into two spaces, separated by a single apartment block. When they first started, they were primarily a takeaway store with very limited seating options. That area looks to have evolved into a larger preparation area for their baked goods, whilst further up Rosslyn street is their sit down cafe.
From day 1 I've always been a fan of their egg sandos. They use shio pan, which is like a simplified and more savoury version of a croissant. The external layer is still crispy but because the dough is not laminated, it lacks the flaky texture of the french pastry. The interior remains fluffy like the texture of a regular bread loaf. Small salt flakes are sprinkled over the dough that counteracts the filling of creamy egg, mild mustard and fruity jam.
The black sesame shio pan was a good snack, albeit on the sticky side, so I recommend making sure there's a sink or wet tissues nearby when you tuck in.
Meanwhile, the chocolate fondant is a perfectly sized piece of decadence. A short stint in the microwave elicits a molten stream of chocolate as we cut into it.
Toby Estate coffee beans are used here. The house blend isn't to my tastes but when I tried their limited edition blend, that was very good.
Purple potato taro mochi drum pan. It's on the sweet side for me but I like how soft the bread is.
If you'd like to visit, is located on 113 Rosslyn Street in West Melbourne. They're open Wednesday to Friday 7.30am to 3.30pm and weekends 9am to 3.30pm. Bookings can be made via their website if you'd like to try their brunch- I know I'll be returning to check out that menu.
