Future Seekers is a fast paced adventure that takes the viewer from Russia in 1917 to 2017 Sydney via Lithgow, L.A. And Coffs Harbour.
Future Seekers will be playing at the
Sydney Philharmonia Hall until April 30.
This is minimalist theatre at its best, all distraction is removed and the audience is free to use their imaginations to fill in the gaps and the actors are free to 'act'. There are no stage curtains and the performers enter the scenes from behind the audience who are seated in the Philharmonia Choir Hall. The four actors work with few props and limited but clever costumes.
The camaraderie between the cast, writer and directors is obvious and you can see that they are invested in the play. I found the story to be moving and powerful but at times had trouble with the connections of the ten diverse stories.
Each actor had a variety of roles which they performed with gusto. I loved the intensity of
Eli Saad's performances and
Sana'a Sheik had a beautiful vulnerability in the piece about the paraplegic girl.
Neveen Hanna had great comedic timing and
Michael Wood showed his versatility as Alexander, Bruce, Michael, Yang, Mr Nevin, Samuel and Alex.
The music performed by pianist
Philip Eames provided an extra level of drama and humour to the piece as well as signalling the scene and location changes.
I enjoy performances such as this that make you think and for me the foundation of the story revolved around love and our reactions to it and how the past loves shape our future life.
