What do you know about Furoshiki?

Proving that we are never too old to learn new things I have just reserved a place in the next Furoshiki Workshop, at the State Library in South Brisbane.

Furoshiki is a Japanese wrapping cloth traditionally used for gift wrapping, and grocery shopping. It originated some time after 700 AD when the tradition was for Japanese to frequent bath houses. To prevent a mix up of the bathers' clothes, the removed clothing was tied up in a Furoskiki.

The art of Furoshiki is regaining popularity with the current awareness of environmental protection. The Japanese Government have been promoting this traditional wrapping method in an effort to reduce the land fill space taken up by plastic bags,

Modern Furoshiki are made of a variety of cloths including silk, cotton, rayon and nylon. They are often decorated with traditional Japanese designs.

At this Workshop on October 29th, as well as the one on November 26th, paper artist and jewellery designer, Mabina Alaka, will teach attendees how to make bags out of Furoshiki material.

These Workshops will be held in the Library Shop, Level 1, in the State Library from 6 pm to 8 pm.q
