If you are on the roads early on a Saturday or Sunday, you will see the many clubs or individuals riding their bikes to keep fit. As a child I grew up on bikes, I rode to school on the bike, rode to the movies, to the swimming pool, rode to your friend's place or up to the local shop. Everyone rode a bike and every venue had bike rack where I'm happy to say our bikes were still in the same place when we came back to them.

Of course in the city life is a bit different with busier highways and schools that may not be close enough for a ride and with cycling being a low impact sport it is also great to see families out on weekend taking to the cycle paths that are plentiful around our city and suburbs.

Every year " The Common Good " hosts the Cycle of Giving event to raise money for organ transplant research. The Prince Charles Hospita l is one of the World's leaders in organ and tissue transplant and all money raised at this annual event goes towards research in that area. The event started in 2006, when Mal Long received a new heart. He and his wife wanted to honour the organ donor family and The Prince Charles Hospital and so the Cycle of Giving Event began.

The event is not a RACE, but a personal challenge. This year's event will be held on 28th February 2016.

You can choose which length of kilometres you wish to ride however; it's quite amazing just how far you can ride without thinking about it. Registration starts at $30, $60 and $70 for early bird prices and you would be participating in a 25, 65 or 100 kilometre ride. Depending on the length of your ride, depends on where the ride starts from – Landsborough, Caboolture or Redcliffe.

Registration for the event costs $30 for a 25 kilometres ride, $60 for 65 kilometres and $70 for 100 kilometres. Early bird prices are available. The ride starts from Landsborough, Caboolture or Redcliffe, depending on the length you have chosen to undertaken. Queensland Rail are donating a special charter train to take participants from Brisbane to their starting points. The event and your ride ends at The Prince Charles Hospital in Chermside .

The first ride at Landsborough (100km) starts at 6.45 am, with following rides commencing at 8.00 am at Caboolture and 9.00 am at Redcliffe .

There are so many health benefits to ride and these include reduced anxiety and depression, heart attacks, diabetes, obesity, increased muscle strength and flexibility, strengthening bones and arthritis.

If you feel riding isn't your thing, you can still assist by going to their website as there are plenty of ways to get involved sponsoring a rider or become a volunteer.

All information about the ride including event rules such as adhering to road rules and the stipulation of wearing a bike helmet etc can be found on the website under FAQs .

Sponsors for this year's event are Merlo Coffee , McAndrew Property Group and The Common Good . Organisers are hoping to raise $200,000 this year.
