Supporting Special Olympics
Dandenong Valley Special Olympics provides sporting opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Currently, we are fundraising with a Trivia Night to send 8 athletes who have been selected to represent Victoria for the upcoming national games held in Melbourne, in sports such as basketball, bowling, bocce, tennis and swimming. Each athlete requires $2700 to attend these games.
Special Olympics is a worldwide movement that inspires people with intellectual disability to reach their personal best through regular sporting competition. The organisation offers a wide range of sports such as basketball, tennis, swimming, athletics, softball and horse riding to name a few. Some Special Olympics athletes strive to win medals, others enjoy the chance to get active, have fun, make friends and be part of a family. Whatever their motivation, Dandenong Valley caters by providing meaningful sports programs delivered within a supportive environment that makes its members feel accepted and proud. Dandenong Valley relies on volunteers to coach, assist, umpire, raise money to ensure training is provided weekly with competitions held bi-monthly. We have a range of athletes with different disabilities such as Autism, Aspergers, Down Syndrome and developmental delays, vision and hearing impairments all working together in a team environment.
