There are numerous agricultural and horticultural shows throughout Victoria. Several are on the fringe of suburban Melbourne, such as the Lilydale Show, Dandenong Show and Whittlesea Show. Many large towns have their own local country shows.

They all have the same thing in common. Fun. Fun for everyone. Fun for kids, big and small, fun for thrill seekers and more sedate fun for adults.

Rides. The main attraction for children are the rides. A gentle cup and saucer seated ride is ideal for the young ones. The older children and teenagers seem to like a high flying, rotating, spinning, gut churning, gravity defying experience.

Slides. Young kids love these. Inflated plastic slopes see kids sliding feet first, head first or sideways, but always having fun.

Food. Kids have to eat. Be it long strips of candy, or curly chips.

Amusement games. Take you pick from catching rubber ducks, throwing darts at balloons, tossing basketballs or the all-time favourite of feeding clowns with ping-pong balls.

Dodgem Cars. Fun for young and old, although observations show there is more non-dodgem than actual dodgem. But it is fun.

Model trains. The older male visitor can re-live their past with a display of model trains, far more sophisticated than their childhood models.

Face painting. Kids love having their face painted to emulate their favourite character, football team or just a pretty picture.

Wood chop. The most watched activity at most shows. See the blades of steel cut through logs like they were made of butter, hard butter that is.

Animals. It's a country show, so there must be animals. Extremely popular with the little ones is the petting enclosure where ducks, rabbits, piglets, lambs, chooks and goats can be patted and hand fed.

Animal rides. A feature of most shows is a ride on an animal. Usually a small pony for the little ones, I've even seen donkey rides. At a recent Lilydale Show was camel rides, which proved very popular.

Active animals. Becoming popular are performing dogs. Not balancing on big rubber balls, but dog high climbs, obstacle races and herding sheep.

Smell the roses. After an exhausting day of fun activities you happen upon the horticultural section and the aroma of roses waft before your nose. Relax and get close and smell the roses.

Country shows are fun, fun and fun, but thankfully they are annual events, there is a limit as how much fun you can have.
