Spring is already here and it won't be long for Summer to arrive. Have you planned any fun and interesting activities to do with your kids and family? If you haven't, perhaps these suggestions below may help to give you some ideas.
Doing fun and interesting activities with kids and family are not necessarily expensive. In fact, the most enjoyable thing is to get everyone involve and getting the hands dirty.
Build Sand Castle
As the weather warms up and the sun shining, it's great to spend some time at the beach. Have a little competition with the kids to build sand castle or sand sculpture. It is an educational activity similar to playing with sandbox where kids learn how sand reacts with different substance (e.g. water, soap) and holds together.

Playing with sand helps kids with their cognitive development, social interaction, and artistic expression. Best of all, access to the beach is free and there are aplenty of beautiful beaches around Sydney.
Make Salt Dough Ornaments
Christmas tree ornaments
An alternative to play dough or plasticine, salt dough is natural and safer for kids to play. It is easy to make and cost effective. There are many salt dough recipe out there with simple ingredients. Spend time with kids by kneading the dough, sculpting and shaping it differently. You can even make ornaments for decoration (e.g. Christmas tree - It's never too early to get ready, is it?)
While it may get really messy, it's a wonderful sensory play experience for kids - no mess, no fun.
Start a garden
Whether it's a fairy garden, or vegetable patch, gardening can be rewarding for children and adults alike. Children loves to play with dirt and gardening allows them to have fun while learning about plants as well as the responsibility to care and nurture them. It's a great family activity which promotes cooperation by working side by side with children. Research has shown that gardening also helps with stress management among adults. So, start digging, planting, wedding and putting your hands in dirt.
Protect your hands from chemicals in cleaning solution
Now is the best time to de-clutter the house. Pick a weekend and get everyone in the family to spring clean the house. Sort out goods to keep, donate, throw or even sell. Organise a garage sale if you've gathered enough goods for sale, or why not register to participate in the coming Garage Sale Trail 2013?
After cleaning the house, you may discover some parts of the house which require minor maintenance and repair work. If possible, try doing it yourself instead of spending unnecessary expenses for handyman services. There are aplenty of resources on the internet for reference or you could even learn a new skill or two for free from the local Bunnings warehouse. Check out the stores to find out the schedules.
As a saying goes, family that eats together, stays together. But it's not just eating, I think cooking and baking together works well too. Try a new recipe, or dine in a new restaurant in town together. Experience cuisines from different cultures for example Vietnamese, Greek, Italian, Chinese etc. What other better ways to get your fingers dirty by cooking, baking and digging in food?
