Singapore is the second most expensive city in Asia to spend the night, according to a 2013 survey conducted by TripAdvisor. If your pockets are empty after you've paid for your hotel, taxi, and dinner, then head to Sentosa – 'Asia's Favourite Playground' – and enjoy these fun free activities.

1. Stand on the edge of continental Asia
The 'Southernmost Point of Continental Asia' is an island off an island (Sentosa) off an island (Singapore) off the mainland of Asia (Peninsula Malaysia). It is linked to Sentosa by a narrow suspension bridge. Climb to the top of one of the three-story timber viewing towers for spectacular views of Sentosa and the Singapore Strait.
When: Any time
Where: Palawan Beach

2. Explore the forests
There are 45 hectares of coastal and secondary forests on Sentosa. Sentosa Nature Discovery is a gallery of interactive exhibits that provide information about the animals, plants, and habitats found on the island. An elevated boardwalk leads from the gallery into the forest and connects with a series of hiking trails that meander through the hills behind Siloso Beach. On the trails, look out for plantain squirrels, long-tailed macaques, olive-backed sunbirds, and oriental whip snakes.
When: Hiking trails–daytime; Sentosa Nature Discovery–9am to 5pm, daily
Where: Imbiah Lookout

3. Hit the Beach
On the southern coast of Sentosa there are three beaches connected by a paved walking path. Head to the beach that suits your style. Siloso Beach is for hipsters; it's the place to strut and be seen. Palawan Beach is for families; it's the place to build sandcastles. Tanjong Beach is for cruisers; it's the place to hide beneath an umbrella with a good book.
When: Any time
Where: Siloso Beach, Palawan Beach, Tanjong Beach

4. Let them entertain you
At venues around Sentosa there are free demonstrations and performances throughout the day. Plan a walking tour, beginning at Siloso Beach and ending at Resorts World, to enjoy them all.

Wave House Sentosa
At Wave House Sentosa, experts (and beginners) strive for perfection on the simulated waves, 'Double FlowRider' and 'FlowBarrel'. Riding the waves requires a combination of skills: surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding, and wakeboarding. The wipe-outs look painful.
When: 11am to 10pm, daily
Where: Siloso Beach

Animal & Bird Encounters
Feed Lories and encounter monkeys, reptiles, and birds up-close.
When: Daily shows run from 2pm to 5.30pm; click here for current show times
Where: Palawan Amphitheater

Crane Dance
Crane Dance is a spectacle of water and light that tells a love story about two large steel cranes (the bird variety of crane that is). If this sounds strange to you, it's because it is.
When: 9pm (Thursdays to Mondays, Public Holidays and eves of Public Holidays)
Where: Resorts World

Lake of Dreams
The Lake of Dreams performance is an extravagant display of fire, water, and light, complete with flaming dragons, water cannons, and lasers.
When: 9.30pm, daily.
Where: Resorts World
