If a season had feelings I'm sure autumn would be envious of spring. Everyone gears up for spring, people do Spring-cleans outs, open their door and windows to get rid of the winter stuffiness and get ready to spring into summer (the most popular belle at the ball).
Hardly anyone spares a thought for poor old autumn! However, don't waste the opportunity to enjoy this season. It's a great time for fun, free activities with the kids.
Use fallen leaves to do printing of wrapping paper, threading of necklaces or paint and lacquer to make small bowls.
Gardening Get the kids involved in digging up and weeding veggie patches. My kids love digging. It's a great messy activity that is nicely followed by a warm bubble bath. Plant potatoes, garlic and onions. Seedlings that require a deep root system like cauliflower, brussel sprouts, broccoli, and, silver-beet do well. This is also a good time to plant bulbs and some fruit trees such as lemons (later in Autumn).
Use any end of the season tomatoes, herbs etc. to make chutney or sauces.
Start indoor D.I.Y. projects Some examples include: changing the curtains or making some new cushions or snuggle blankets. Get the place ready for some warm indoors activities like book parties where everyone gets their favourite book, a blanket and some snacks and snuggles up for a good old fashioned reading session.
Dig out the slow cooker Find some hearty recipes, select some lentils and soup mixes to start cooking healthy soups and casseroles.
Make some garden decorations Use bells on string, pieces of old toys or jewellery to create wind chimes. These are simple, quick and fun to make.
Clean out the old fireplace In preparation for winter clean up and spruce up the fireplace. A scrub with sugar soap can do wonders. Put some pot pourri, candles, incense or cinnamon sticks into the fireplace. Remember to take out the fireplace balloons before lighting it!
No need to get the winter blues yet. As we start to baton down the hatches, there are still many fun and free activities that you can enjoy with kids. Post some of your own great ideas for others to share. Have fun.
