Fun and Cheap Things to do With Kids in Spring

Spring is amazing! It's great to get out and about in the sunshine and make some amazing memories and bond with your kids. But keeping kids busy and entertained can be expensive and it is easy to run out of ideas.

So when you're not sure what to do, here are some ideas to keep the kids occupied and to make the most of the beautiful weather.



Play at the park

On these beautiful spring days, it's great to get out in the sunshine and nothing beats getting out the house and taking the kids to the park to burn off some excess energy. You can always change things up a bit and try a park you've never been to before. There are so many great ones around.



Bike riding

Get out the bike or scooter and go for a ride and explore some new places. Make the most of the beautiful weather.


Grow a vegetable garden

Spring is a great time to get a vegetable garden going. It's a great way to get the kids outside, they can learn about growing different plants and they might be willing to try some different foods that they helped to grow themselves.
Go camping

Camping is heaps of fun and spring is a great time for a weekend away, or longer if you can. Here's some great tips for camping with kids.



Go bushwalking

Bushwalking is a great activity to do with kids. It can be so much fun to see what animals you can spot or listening for different birds chirping. Don't forget good shoes, water bottle and a hat. Even in spring, it can get fairly hot in the sun.



Go for a picnic

Picnics are a lot of fun and the kids might light to help make some special treats to take along. And even if you can't get away anywhere, you can still have a picnic in the backyard.
Fly a Kite

Flying a kite is so much fun. It's so exciting when you finally get it up in the air. Who doesn't love flying a kite?
Nature Scavenger Hunt

Have a list of things in nature the kids have to find, like leaves, twigs, rocks or flowers, trees, birds, a butterfly or anything you can think of. They don't have to collect the items, just spot them. Or for something different, a list of sounds they have to hear. It could include laughter, birds chirping, a dog barking, the wind or even an insect – sometimes they can be really noisy. Or listen to my favourite, the kookaburra.


Nature Crafts

There are so many nature crafts that kids would love to do. Have a look at Pinterest for some inspiration. You would probably be surprised at the amazing things you can make.

Blow some bubbles!**

Who doesn't love bubbles? Grab a bubble wand or make your own and go crazy with bubbles. See if the kids can find something else to make some amazing bubbles with.

Chalk drawings**

Get some chalk and draw on the pavement outside. You can draw roads, fantasy worlds, elaborate cities or absolutely anything you can think of. Make sure to take some photos of the masterpieces before they are gone forever.
Take a day trip

Find somewhere you'd love to go and take a day trip. It can be somewhere you've already been or somewhere entirely you. Go exploring, have fun and make some memories. It can be a great bonding experience.

Make a spring scrapbook**

At the end of your spring adventures, grab a book or scrapbook and stick in some photos of the fun you've had, draw some flowers and butterflies or anything that reminds you of spring. You could add your child's handprints and turn them into flowers. It would look cute and you can look back later and see how small their hands were. Write down memories, anecdotes and anything you want to remember. It's surprising how easy it is to forget things over the years when we don't take notes.
Keep the memories and don't forget to do it all and more the following spring.
