Wonderful Orchard with Fruit, Animals and Picnic Spot
Jump in the car and head out on a very worthwhile day trip to Canoelands Orchard. Canoelands Orchard is, funnily enough, located in Canoelands which is part of The Hornsby Shire.
As you leave the hustle and bustle of metropolitan Sydney enjoy your drive along Old Northern Road. There are so many local growers and producers in this area - take some time to stop and buy local flowers, eggs, fruit and vegetables or plants. I love driving along this road, and once you pass through Cherrybrook you really feel like you are in the country.
The entry to Canoelands Orchards is well signed and there is a large carpark. Upon our arrival here we were greeted warmly by 'Ma'. It was nectarine picking season at the time of our visit and I could see that the trees were absolutely laden with fruit. To pick fruit it is $5.00 per adult, $3.00 per child and free for kids under 5. You also pay for the fruit you pick (which was $6.00 per kilo for the nectarines). At first it seems a bit strange that you pay to pick as well as pay for the fruit, but you are actually getting great value for money as there are lots of other things to do.
I was here on a weekday which was absolutely perfect as there was barely a soul in sight. My 1 year old and I had a great time wandering about exploring the farm. Firstly there are a stack of animals to see - goats, horses, pigs, chickens, ducks and bunny rabbits.
To top it off there is a farm stall where you can buy fruit (without paying the picking fee), jam, chutney, drinks, coffee, ice creams and farm fresh honey. There is a sheltered area with tables and chairs for you to sit and enjoy the scenery. There is also a grassy area where you could lay a picnic rug down, however there wasn't much shade in this space.
On weekends kids can also partake in a tractor ride ($3.00). The farm also runs birthday party and group tours.
Stone fruit season runs November to early January so this is the best time to visit the farm. Depending on when you visit you may find nectarines, plums, peaches or apricots. Make sure to check out their website and facebook page to get the latest on farm activities.
The orchards can be found at 27 - 29 Canoelands Road, Canoelands, which is directly off Old Northern Road. The orchards are very well signed and easy to find, approximately 3 kilometres or so off the main road. Canoelands is approximately 60 kilometres from the CBD or around a one hour drive (using tollways).
The farm is open seven days a week from 9.00am to 5.00pm. Please call Jaime 0419 688 039 with any queries.
