A drive out to the Perth Hills is not complete for me unless I bring back a big haul of fresh fruit.

There is something nice about driving past the orchards and buying fruit direct from the people who grow it.

On a recent drive out to the Kalamunda area we came across a place called Fruit Loop, in Pickering Brook.

A small red and white plastic sign pointing us down a small gravel driveway was all there was to send us in the right direction.

The friendly owner of the property welcomed us into a large shed and explained how it all worked.

To the front were the bargain pears and apples, which can be mixed and matched- for just a dollar a kilogram.

The big supermarkets didn't want these ones as they were not pretty enough, but it's not all about looks is it?

The Packham pears and golden delicious apples may have what the Fruit Loopians call a bit of "rusty blush", but they taste fine to me and are also a great option for juicing or making your home made apple sauce.

The options are pretty endless, you could dehydrate them or even make your own apple cider vinegar.

There is a set of scales in the middle of the shed for weighing the fruit- so it's all pretty simple.

Of course prices and variety depends on what fruit is available at the time.

When we visited there was a variety of other apples, as well as plums, nectarines and more plum varieties than I knew existed, all on sale for $3.50 a kilogram- with the option to mix and match whichever fruits you fancied.

There was also a selection of preserves and other goodies made from local produce on offer.

If you plan on buying in bulk, it's always a good idea to bring along your own boxes and don't forget, these guys are operating out of a shed, not a shop, so bring cash, as there is no Eftpos available.

It's best to check the Fruit Loop Facebook page to make sure Fruit Loop is open, after all, it is about seasonal fruit and the place is family run but at this stage fruit lovers can get their fix on most Saturdays and Sunday from 9am to 12noon.
