This Winter, the Yarra Sculpture Gallery is excited to present a joint exhibition by Robyn Norris and Simon Cross, entitled 'From the Earth, Fire and Fibre; A Meeting Point'.

Opening to the public on Saturday 12th June, the exhibition will feature stunning plant fibre wall pieces by basketmaker Robyn Norris alongside a collection of unique ceramic pots by teacher and ceramic artist Simon Cross.

This unique collaboration between Robyn and Simon explores the diversity and artistry of basket weaving and ceramic sculpture - both ancient crafts which can be made with a wide variety of natural materials.

Robyn's work is inspired by a lifelong love of nature. Observations of the landscapes of rolling hills, rivers, leaves and seed pods are reflected in the warm colours and textures she works with. It is her aim to bring nature into the home.

Immersing oneself in nature is soothing and gratifying giving a sense of wellbeing. The process of gathering, growing and nurturing is intrinsic to all her creations. Through dyeing stitching and shaping organic shapes, she shares her joy.

Simon's pots are created from clay and fire and shaped organically to partner the feeling of bringing nature into your home.

His work explores and aims to represent the concept of cutting or breaking away at an object in order to open up and find something precious within. This is expressed within the form of the vessels outer shells that display embossing and inclusions of the natural and manufactured aspects of our inhabited environment.[

The textural embossing of the found environment on the surface of the vessel creates a sense of capturing artefacts in time. The ceramic works diverge away from the traditional convention of the vessel having a practical element to hold or contain.

Come and discover the passion of these two talented Australian artists at 'From the Earth, Fire and Fibre; A Meeting Point'.

The exhibition opens on Saturday 12th June and runs till Sunday 4th July 2021. Please note the Yarra Sculpture Gallery is open from Thursday to Sunday from 11.00 am to 4.00 pm. All are welcome to come along and enjoy the display.
