Not a morning person? Then consider coming along to Gallery M to celebrate Australia's ANZAC spirit!
As part of City of Marion's commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli, Gallery M is hosting Marion Heritage Research Centre's whole of gallery exhibition 'From Almond Groves to Poppy Fields: Marion's Unsung War Heroes'.
Visitors can read stories and view historical photographs, personal memoirs and artefacts of local servicemen and servicewomen who served in World War I.
The exhibition title originates from the Marion of 1915 - where plentiful orchards and market gardens existed, including an abundance of almond trees. During this time Marion was famous for the blossoming of its almond groves.'From Almond Groves to Poppy Fields' accurately chronicles the transition of servicemen and servicewomen who departed from their beloved town of Marion in response to the call of war for Australian troops to defend its allegiance to Great Britain.
The exhibition's major draw card is a World War I water cart, on loan from the Keswick Army Museum.
An important component of the exhibition is opportunity for community participation through 'The Anzac Poppy Project'. Visitors to the exhibition are invited to make a poppy and donate it to the exhibition for display. It is the community's opportunity to keep the ANZAC Spirit alive and a perfect way to give back to those who served and protected our country with honour.
