I know you are going to love this new children's picture book from Ford Street Publishing. I certainly did. Frizzle and Me, written by Ellie Boyce and illustrated by Andrew McLean, is not only a delightful story with cute pictures, but it also has a very modern topic. The themes revolve around inclusion and diversity.

It is a gentle and amusing story of growing up in a rainbow family. It is big deal for little kids when their families change. But in this fluid family, there is plenty of love and understanding. The family (and the book) abounds with reading, singing, cuddles, eating and other activities that children love. The characters in the book are diverse and colourful (literally and figuratively). An unusual device, which is becoming more common, is that the children are not gender-specific.

This book works equally well as a bedtime story, read aloud, or for discussion groups. It is suitable for children aged over five years. Check out Ford Street Publishing for teachers' notes for classroom activities. Discussions might include how each person is similar to or different from the characters in the book. Pupils can make inferences from the pictures about families and communities. There are many opportunities to demonstrate respect, kindness, acceptance and empathy.

What is a Rainbow Family?
A Rainbow Family is a same-sex or LGBTIQA& #43 ; parented family. It includes any lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer person who has a child or children. Rainbow Families Queensland came to my attention when I was writing a WeekendNotes article for the Brisbane Pride Festival. Rainbow Families hold Storytime in local libraries where you can enjoy a story celebrating family diversity. Stories focus on families which have two mothers or two fathers. Frizzle and Me is a perfect example.
