A Little Shop with Heart and Soul
Nestled in a cosy nook at the front of Royal Perth Hospital, the Friends Shop is a delightful little spot which is reminiscent of a slower, gentler time and place. Staffed by the dedicated Friends of Royal Perth Hospital, a substantial percentage of the profits from the shop are donated to various departments of the hospital to help purchase equipment such as wheelchairs, and for the welfare of needy patients. Since their inception in 1959, the Friends have become an institution at the hospital, and some of the present volunteers have worked there for at least fifty years.
For hospital workers, patients and casual visitors, the Friends Shop is truly a shop with heart. As well as stocking a comprehensive selection of practical necessities and personal care items for patients, it also has a great range of snacks, drinks, cuddly stuffed toys, ornaments and novelties. When you're next in the city and need to purchase a present for a loved-one (or even just a refreshing drink for yourself), it's therefore a good shopping destination to keep in mind. Unlike other shops, when you purchase something here you're helping many Western Australians from all walks of life who require specialised medical attention. The cheerful old-fashioned service which you'll receive is worth all the endeavour of getting here.
For first-time visitors, the Friends Shop is very easy to find. It's located on Level 3, close to the hospital's Victoria Square entrance. Opening hours are from Monday to Friday, 5.30am until 7.30pm, and Saturday / Sunday from 10.30am until 4.30pm. Next time you're in the area, drop in and have a chat with the volunteers who are on duty. I've been intrigued with this quaint little spot place for years, as I'd often pass it as I'd come and go from McIvor Station. Now that I know what they do and have personally experienced their friendly helpful service I'll definitely be back.

Why? The Friends of Royal Perth Hospital is a great place to purchase gifts and snacks because a percentage of its profits gets donated to various departments of the hospital for equipment, as well as to patient welfare services.
