[ADVERT]Gardening in Perth can be a challenge. Scorching hot summers and permanent water restrictions seem like overwhelming problems. In recent years one popular solution was to establish native gardens. Once people realised these varieties flourished before European settlement, it was easy to see that they didn't mind heat and needed less water and fertiliser but still thrived. The fact that many attracted birds or had stunning foliage or scent was a bonus.

Not all natives suit home gardeners however – as beautiful as they are, no one really wants a towering lemon-scented gum tree in their suburban yard. Fortunately expert advice and quality plants are available at the Friends of Kings Park Autumn Native Plant sale.

The Friends of Kings Park hold four sales a year. All the plants on offer are grown by volunteers, either from cuttings taken in the park and Botanic Garden or seeds collected in the park or supplied by Western Australian commercial suppliers. Many are hard to find varieties and some are Declared Rare Flora, meaning the Department of Environment and Conservation considers them at risk of extinction.

Approximately 260 species of plants will be on sale, so there should be something to suit evey garden. A list of all the varieties on offer will be uploaded to the Friends of Kings Park website two weeks before the event. Since the plants are sourced from those growing in the park, why not take this opportunity for a visit beforehand to see the full-grown version? And if you still need help on the day, volunteers from the Kings Parks Master Gardeners will be available to provide advice on selecting and caring for your plants.

Shoppers are encouraged to bring their own boxes or bags and EFTPOS and credit card facilities are available. All funds raised from the Plant Sale go directly towards supporting research and special projects at Kings Park and Botanic Garden.
