The
2:30pm talk at
ANZAC Cottage on
June 5,
2016 will be an opportunity to 'meet' the men and find out what they did for ANZAC Cottage and the young suburb of Mt Hawthorn.
Anne Chapple will reveal the story behind the Mt Hawthorn Progress Association, their other projects and the motivation of this visionary group who initiated and completed the ANZAC Cottage project in 1916.
ANZAC Cottage built in one day
ANZAC Cottage was built in one day on February 12, 1916 by the community of Mount Hawthorn as a home for a returned wounded soldier and his family and as a memorial for those who lost their lives in the tragic Gallipoli landing.
You cannot help but wonder what the fellows from the Mt Hawthorn Progress Association would think if they had known that their ambitious project — to build ANZAC Cottage in one day — had lasted for at least one decade, let alone a century.

The Mt Hawthorn Progress Association was formed in 1904 to 'promote and safeguard' the interests of the ratepayers and residents of Mount Hawthorn. Their involvement in all aspects of the community reveals the motivation and philosophy of the group.
Apart from ANZAC Cottage, the Progress Association worked to extend the tram service to the new suburb and highlight the issue of poor water pressure. They also expressed concern about the North Perth Council's restrictions, which limited homes in the new suburb to brick constructions (categorised as a working man's suburb, the concern was that people would not be able to afford to build).

Community and the ANZAC Spirit
ANZAC Cottage in Mount Hawthorn is unique; constructed as a practical monument to commemorate the Anzac's participation in World War 1, the first memorial to the Great War built in Australia. The recipient,
Private Cuthbert John Porter , lived in the cottage for 48 years raising the Australian flag every dawn. Anne Chapple, granddaughter of John Porter, always brings a personal aspect to the events held at this unique memorial.
