Acclaimed Mexican artist
Frida Kahlo (1907 - 1954) is perhaps best known for her intensely personal and revealing self-portraits. Her works are often described as bold, vibrant, and passionate. Frida Kahlo was a prolific artist who produced a wide range of colourful and confronting paintings in her lifetime. Frida's life story and her political leanings may be as confronting as her artworks. Now a cinematic documentary,
Frida – Viva La Vida celebrates Frida Kahlo's exceptional life and contribution to the art world.
In May 2006, Frida Kahlo's self-portrait titled
"Roots" sold at auction for US$5.6 million dollars, which set a record for a Latin American artwork. The 2002 biographical film'
Frida, starring Salma Hayek as Frida, won two Academy Awards.
Of Frida Kahlo's quotable quotes, perhaps my favourite is, "
I used to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it's true I'm here, and I'm just as strange as you." (
Frida Kahlo ). Pretty clearly Frida did not imagine herself to be any ordinary person.
