Who Was Frida Kahlo?
If you've never heard of her before, Frida was a Mexican artist. Her full name was Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón (born 1907, died 1954). She employed a surreal folk-art style or painting. Most of her work is very colourful, autobiographical, and meaningful. Frida was the first Mexican artist to have work purchased by the Louvre in Paris. She primarily painted self-portraits and portraits with messaging around gender, class, politics, race, identity, and colonialism. She also channelled a lot of her physical pain (due to a bus accident) into her work. In her personal life, she was well known for her lavish dinner parties and love of food, nature, and animals.
