Mention the Frick Collection and may art lovers in New York will immediately recall the renowned art museum founded by Pittsburgh coke and steel industrialist Henry Clay Frick in the early 1900s. This one of a kind museum housed in a 1914 Fifth Ave mansion is home to an admirable private collection of antiquities including 18th century French furniture and porcelains, sculptures and masterpieces of European painting. One such painting by one of the greatest European artists was El Greco's 'Vincenzo Anastagi', acquired a century ago by Henry Clay Frick.

A master of portraiture, El Greco was born in Crete in 1541 and spent most of his artist career in Spain. He produced one of his greatest works during his 6 year sojourn in Venice and Rome.

The focus of recent scholarly attention, El Greco's portrait of Vincenzo Anastagi, a Knight of Malta (1563) illustrates a level of artistry and virtuosity that went beyond the literal depiction of reality uncommon during the Renaissance. It is one of only 2 full-length portraits by the master.

To mark the 400th anniversary of El Greco's death, the Frick Collection has shared this rare work with the public since 5 August 2014 in its 'Men in Armor' exhibition.

To draw contrast and highlight El Greco's departure from convention of his period, the museum has paired 'Vincenzo Anastagi' with the rarely seen 'Jacopo Boncompagni' by the artist's Roman contemporary Scipione Pulzone, on loan from a private collection.

As part of the 'Men in Armor' exhibition, the Frick Collection will be hosting a FREE public lecture on 22 October at 6pm with admission. Chaired by Andrew Casper, Assistant Professor of Art History from the Miami University in Ohio, this lecture will discuss El Greco's artistic career with attention o his rapid assimilation of Renaissance Italian painting as well as the evolution of his idiosyncratic style. To attend, simply turn up. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, and
reservations are not accepted.

This rare exhibition is the result of efforts by Anne L. Poulet Curatorial Fellow, Jeongho Park and generously funding by gifts from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Sidney R. Knafel and Londa Weisman in memory of Vera and Walter A. Eberstadt. Make sure you take time out for a long look at the 'Men in Armor' before the exhibition closes on 26 October.
