If you drive long Milton road near the old Milton Tennis Centre and Milton Bowl you will have seen a hive of activity over the last eighteen months as the Brisbane City Council has worked to convert it into a brand new park for the area. A sad sight since the 2002 fire that destroyed the old tennis stadium the are is set to be launched as a new park, called Frew Park on Saturday 29th November.
Original tennis centre and new plans for site
In its heyday the tennis centre hosted eight Australian Opens as well as concerts by the Rolling Stones, Elton John and Deep Purple. Honouring this history the new park will feature the original giant tennis racket. It will also have six tennis courts and a number of volleyball courts with space for basket ball and netball. There is plenty of space for picnics and playground equipment for older kids as just around the corner in Gregory Park, next to Milton State School is a great playground for the littlies. This includes a huge curling slide, ledges, nets and cages for climbing as well as plenty of spaces for kids to hang out. The park also provides a carpark and public toilets (Hooray!).
New play equipment
The new look park is being launched on Saturday 29 November 4pm by Lord Mayor Graham Quirk and Councillor Peter Matic as its Annual Christmas Extravaganza. There will be a visit by Santa, free tennis coaching by Hot Shots Tennis, a sausage sizzle and other entertainment including music by the Kate Street Mob Jazz Band and BrizWest Community Concert Band, bouncy castles, pony rides and face painting. At 6.45 the movie Frozen will be shown on a big screen.
