A group of college students staying at a lake house in Louisiana are horrified to find they are being hunted by a giant alligator. Brenda Gray, an alligator expert, believes there might be something else going on besides alligator attacks, and enlists the help of the Deputy Sheriff and CSI agent Tom Colton to find out what.
Freshwater (2016) is an American monster movie directed by Brandeis Berry. It stars New Zealand stunt woman and actress, Zoƫ Bell (from Deathproof) as Brenda, and Joe Lando (from Doctor Quinn Medicine Woman) as Sheriff Joe. Alison Haislip from Team Unicorn plays Claudia, one of the unlucky people at the lake house.
Freshwater isn't exactly great cinema, but it's a cut above many of the B movies I've watched. The acting is mostly pretty competent, and there was a more complex plot than just 'giant alligator eats a load of people'. The storyline actually had the potential to be a decent X-Files episode, although probably in the hands of a different writer. The effects were not the worst I've seen, but not great.
If you really want to watch a movie about a giant alligator or crocodile and you've already seen the entire Lake Placid series then by all means enjoy this movie. There are worse things you could be doing with your time, like planting landmines or inventing a new cryptocurrency. Freshwater is 1 hour and 24 minutes long (yay for movies that are 90 minutes or under!). It is currently streaming on Tubi.
