Fog and mist is not something usually associated with a Sydney Summer, yet it's something Sydney-siders have continued to experience since early December 2018. NSW Bureau of Meteorology says there is a simple explanation as the mists roll across Sydney. To paraphrase, they say it's due to the low cloud as a result of a moist air mass and weak winds, following a period of rain.

Areas up and down the coast, as well as many parts of Sydney Harbour, have seen this unusual phenomenon. Harbour ferries have been disrupted, and boaties have been advised to take care.

With Summer Holidays well underway, beach-goers have not been dissuaded, even if visibility was reduced along beaches as light winds gradually pushed the fog along the coast throughout the day.

The popular in Harbord is a favourite with swimmers and surfers, walkers and families. The community feel here attracts regulars from near and far. It's not unusual to see a cyclist with a surfboard strapped to the side, or a family SUV unloading kids and toys for a day at the beach. Many a campervan can be spotted with visitors from out of town.

The beach is tucked in between two headlands with Queenscliff at the South and Freshwater at the North. There is a large, natural rock swimming pool at the base of the northern headland which is perfect for swimming laps.

After many years of frequenting in all seasons, seeing the sea mist engulf unit blocks and headlands was fascinating.

Visitors found their spots on the sand as they knew the mist would pass. The weather was warm and the water was pleasant. Surfers had enough visibility to surf safely.

The Surf Life Saving Club sets up daily beach patrols and runs a nippers program during the Summer months on a Sunday morning. In the same building are change rooms with showers and toilets, function rooms, and a café. There's always something happening here as well as within the adjoining park which is equipped with BBQs and picnic tables.

Harbord Village , the Harbord Hotel , Harbord Diggers and a selection of other cafes and restaurants are all nearby, with the closest being Pilu which commands the closest view over the beach.
