If you like to source very fresh, 1st grade, quality fruit and vegetables, then Mt Lawley Fresh Provisions is the place to go!

They opened their doors in 1989 and are now a Mt Lawley icon - with their fantastic range of unusual, as well as a large range of common items, some of which include:

  • [b]Cooking books

  • Beautiful floral arrangements

  • Gift wrapped pot plants

  • Cordials

  • Milk

  • Chocolates-sweets

  • Dips

  • Vegan food
  • Pasta
  • Meat
  • Sauces
  • And much, much more[/b].

  • The 2IC, Mika, explained that they are continually sourcing new Vegan products and when they receive requests from customers, they will always attempt to get the product in.

Mika advised me that they buy best quality green tomatoes, and ripen them on the premises as, if they buy already ripe tomatoes, they will not last long once the customer buys them.

Their fruit/vegetables are always fresh and things like avocados are checked every day and those no longer up to their high standard, are removed or sold as specials. I found that this is a great idea as I have so often bought avocados and ended up having to throw them out, but not so with these - they are huge, firm and delicious with no brown marks inside.

They also have custard apples which are quite difficult to find and on occasion I have found them in a local shopping centre but they always seem to be soft and "squishy" making them unsuitable to buy.

    [SECTION]Flowers and Plants[/SECTION]
The floral arrangements are some of the most beautiful I have seen and you can watch the florists as they make these up near the entrance to the shop.

They also have, gift wrapped pot plants with several quite rare ones, and all in pristine condition.

They range in price and would make an ideal gift when going out to friends' places for a meal, instead of the usual chocolates!

    [SECTION]Fruit[/SECTION]
Their range of fruit is just awesome!
Things like mandarins look fresher than at a lot of other places, and their displays are visually stunning.

They have pineapple, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, several types of oranges, grapefruit, many different apples, water melon, rock melon, pomegranate and the lovely firm custard apples to name but a few.

Or you can buy a ready made fruit salad if you are in a hurry or just can't be bothered chopping everything up.

Mika explained that most of their fruit is local however if the quality is not good enough or it is out of season, they will import from America. Hence they had some beautiful seedless green grapes and flawless stone fruit including peaches, nectarines and plums.

They have the cheap strawberries, however I opted to buy the more expensive ones as they just looked so much nicer and there were no "rotten" ones on the bottom, which you often get elsewhere.

    [SECTION]Vegetables[/SECTION]
There are so many varieties of vegetables available, and they are all fresh, with nothing looking slightly limp as you sometimes see.

They import red capsicum at this time of year, from New Zealand and although these were expensive, they are far nicer than the ones available at a supermarket.

They also have things like kohlrabi, many different types and sizes of tomatoes including Heirloom ones which I have not seen before in a shop.

Even staple vegetables like carrots look quite different at Fresh Provisions! Their displays make their vegetables so inviting that I ended up buying far more than I went in for.

    [SECTION]Vegan Products[/SECTION]
As mentioned earlier in this article, they are continually increasing the Vegan range and some of the products they now carry are:

The Gardein range of frozen vegan food, including
  • Mince
  • Chicken patties
  • Fish fingers
  • Meatballs

  • Vegan food is becoming more and more popular, so if you are a Vegan, you need to check out their frozen section to find some great items.

    [SECTION]Cakes[/SECTION]
Their cake range is "to die for"! A long counter full of many varieties of both small cakes, as well as whole larger cakes for around $32.90.

I had to be content with just photographing these due to a high sugar reading, and having to attempt to get rid of my sweet tooth, however this was a real problem as once again the cakes looked so inviting.

    [SECTION]Cooked food and delicatessen[/SECTION]
Their range of home cooked foods is excellent and while expensive, they all look so yummy, and the ones I have bought in the past, were all very good.

There is so much choice in the cooked food and it is difficult to decide which one or two to buy!

There are vegetarian as well as meat dishes, salads and more. Their salads are all made on the premises however not all their cooked meals are made on the premises.

Their range of cheeses is also very extensive, and is arranged in a very attractive manner.

They also have a large range of processed meats, which although I do not eat, look fresh and appetising.

The range of breads available are from 5 or 6 different bakeries, where Mika explained they source out the best ones.

    [SECTION]Supermarket Items[/SECTION]
They have a large range of supermarket items, some of which you cannot get at other places and a very small proportion of these are mentioned on the first page.

    [SECTION]Hampers and Catering[/SECTION]
They also do catering which can save the busy person a lot of time and effort - just phone them on 9227 6309.

An example of their cake platters which cost just $24 are these delicious smaller cakes.

They will make hampers, as well as platters of hot meals, and these can be discussed with Mika by phoning her at the shop.

All in all, Fresh Provision at 77 Walcott Street, Mt Lawley, is a reliable place to shop, where you can be assured of the best, friendly attention, and fresh food that will last. There is free parking for an hour in a parking area next to the shop, and off Walcott Street.

Check out their website for more information, or go down and spend some time there - it is fascinating just to walk around.
