Jacob Lingard is a Brisbane based stand-up comedian whose commitment to the form is so outstandingly dedicated, he's an inspiration to many in the scene. He's an incredibly honest, down-the-line act who has a commanding presence which turns heads the moment he walks into a room.

Back in 2013, recognising an abundance of talent around him, he created a show called Fresh Meat at a little Brisbane cafe bar. Originally it was just a way for him to do things on stage that he wasn't allowed to do at the comedy clubs. He'd been writing with a lot of alternative comedians at the time and they were coming up with all these fun ideas and characters for which they had no place to perform.

The show started out as a comedy showcase with a twist but by the end, it became this crazy, almost obstacle course-like show. There were stand-ups, improv groups, sketch troupes and musical acts side by side in a smorgasbord of comedy.

Sometimes performers were planted as audience members subverting everything, demolishing the fourth wall. One show an improv performer pretended to be a stand-up doing his first ever show. This young guy named, Callum Wratten got up and we framed it like it was his first ever time. As expected, the audience were hugely sympathetic, giving him so much love for about 3 minutes as he rattled off the worst material he could think of. When they finally ran out of good will and stopped laughing, an older guy named Chris Martin came in dressed as his dad and berated the crowd for not laughing at his son's jokes. It ended in this Benny Hill-style chase between a crying son and his father through the traffic outside. They ended up reconciling back inside to a standing ovation from the crowd. As you can tell, this is not your run of the mill comedy night.

Through May, the night returns for a limited run of three at The Brightside, featuring hilarious names such as Dan Rath, Sam Bowden & Jasmine Fairbairn. Rather than being held in a cafe, it will be at a venue armed with lighting and smoke machines. The inmates will be running the asylum for a short time, get yourself along while you can!
