Grow - Cook - Swap - Shop

I featured Labuan Square in my article on Yarn Bombing .

At the time of writing that article I wasn't aware of all the effort that has been put in to setting up an initiative to provide fresh fruit and vegetables for the local residents of North Geelong.

Why eat local fresh foods?

"2 & 5" According to statistics more than 40% of Victorians do not eat the recommended daily allowance of 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables each day. With this in mind local social enterprises set up the Geelong North Local Food Map. Click here to download the pdf.

With the support of local social enterprises, access to fresh healthy local foods has been improving. The Geelong North Local Food Map displays local support groups, shows you how to get around to the venues to buy the local fresh food and also provides support to be pro-active yourself.

The local food map for North Geelong covers the northern suburbs including farm areas at Lovely Banks and Lara to the North of Geelong and Hamlyn Heights to the South. The local food map also covers Corio, Norlane, and North Geelong.

2&5 FRESH FOOD SHOP

The 2&5 shop is located in Labuan Square, Forster St, Norlane and is bursting at the seams with beautiful fresh produce. Their fruit and vegetables are sourced from a local produce wholesaler or purchased direct from the grower. They even have some exciting produce provided by local 'backyard' growers.

In their store now : quality fresh fruit and vegetables, chutneys, jams, free range eggs as well as seeds and seedlings. They also sell healthy pre-prepared meals, salads and soups.

2&5 FRESH FOOD MARKET STAND

2&5 also have a roving market stand that operates at different locations in Corio and Norlane throughout the week. Their market stand brings all the goodies from their shop closer to YOU. Currently the market stand operates at two local schools and at community centres.

Some benefits of the food initiative:

It is healthier - local fresh food that is chemical free.

It can save you money and build community - fruit and vegetables can be around 30% cheaper in local markets. If you grow and swap your food it can be even cheaper.

It's good for local producers - buying direct from a farmer or from shops that purchase direct from farmers allows producers to take a bigger share of the profit, making their business more viable.

So what can you do and how can you take advantage of this initiative? Grow your own produce and take it to 2&5 at Labuan Square. 2&5 wants your home grown produce. Come along to a food swap day and swap your home grown carrots for a home grown pumpkin. Place your homegrown products on the swap table and make a fair exchange.
