Coming from Canada, we didn't really know what to expect around Christmas except that it definitely wasn't going to be white. I had heard ads declaring that Christmas was around the corner because the mangoes and cherries were ripe and thought " Wow, this is going to be different!" Then I spoke with people who told me that while some have bbq's and gorge on gorgeous shellfish, many still cook turkeys and hams and have traditional Christmas dinners, even in ridiculously hot weather! Then I thought about the iconic Christmas tree. Would there be real trees? Would they last? Could we possibly not have one? Probably not.

There really is nothing like the look and smell of a real Christmas tree. You do have to keep it well watered and couldn't possibly get away with the tradition here of putting up your tree on the day of the pageant but if you want to really get into the Christmas spirit, you can find a real tree in the Adelaide area and there are a few options.

Muscular Dystrophy sells "A" grade trees which supports their State Electric Wheelchair Sports Team and delivers them for free in the Adelaide Metro Area. Prices vary according to size starting at $60 for a 4-5 foot tree. Call Muscular Dystrophy Association of South Australia on (08) 8234 5266 to make an order, or to enquire for further details. They deliver on December 13 and need orders in by Dec 5.

There are a few Christmas Tree Farms in the Adelaide Hills;

Santa Trees Christmas Tree Farm in the Adelaide Hills offer tree delivery or the opportunity to walk around the living tree farm until you find the perfect tree and then you can ask them to cut the tree or you they will give you a hand saw and you can do it yourself. We did this a few times in Canada however were up to our knees in snow! They also can arrange picking up the tree after Christmas and disposing of it for you which is nice!

Adelaide Hills Christmas Tree Farm in Verdun also has beautiful bushy trees cut fresh every day. You can pre-order online and they will pick out a nice one for you but you are welcome to choose another when you go to pick it up. The prices are reasonable starting at $50. for about 5', $65 for about 6' and $80. for about 7'.

Chandler's Hill boasts the oldest Christmas tree farm in South Australia and the people who have been going there for years believe that this family are incredibly passionate about their products. Their facebook page explains that they are open from November 24 until December 23 and sell other items like decorations and cakes and puddings made traditionally with South Australian ingredients. See the page here

Some of these places also sell Christmas Tree stands which you will need or you can find one at your local Bunnings.

You can't really beat a fresh Christmas tree unless you are planning on leaving the day after for a festive camping trip -something that you just wouldn't do in Canada this time of the year!
